Knauf Culvert Replacement Project

Description

The proposed project includes removal of an emergency temporary grouted arch culvert and replacement of an existing undermined corrugated culvert pipe with a precast concrete box culvert within Newtown Creek, southwest of the Knauf facility. Construction activities will include excavation of rail ballast material, removal of existing concrete and piping, site grading and vegetation removal, installation of a 117 foot long box culvert, outlet and inlet wingwalls and construction of a 460 foot long temporary access road on the east side of Newtown Creek. Removal of existing vegetation on the eastern side of Newtown Creek will be required for equipment access. If authorized, the existing railroad access road may also be used for access to the work area. Following completion of the project, equipment and materials will be removed and the temporary access road would be restored. Riparian vegetation will be re-planted where removed and also on the western bank impacted during completed emergency repair activities.
