Viewpoint Amphitheater Project

Description

Viewpoint School, a private TK–12 school, proposes construction and operation of a new outdoor amphitheater on its existing campus to expand the school’s performing arts and outdoor instructional facilities. The Viewpoint School campus occupies approximately 19 acres. The Project would not increase student enrollment or school capacity and would not result in an increase in the number of students or staff on campus. The amphitheater would serve as an alternate venue for existing school programs and events currently held in other on-campus facilities. The Project would involve demolition of an existing outdoor education area within the campus and development of a terraced hillside amphitheater. The amphitheater would include terraced hillside seating accommodating approximately 531 persons, including eight accessible seating spaces. The Project would also include construction of a performance bandshell with a structural truss system designed to support lighting and sound equipment, as well as a control booth to house audiovisual equipment. To improve campus circulation and accessibility, the Project would include construction of a new pedestrian bridge crossing Dry Canyon Creek, connecting the existing parking lot area and campus buildings to the amphitheater site. Additional pedestrian access would be provided via existing ramps from the Primary School and a proposed wooden walkway extending from the Academic Hall Terrace. The boardwalk would include an integrated outdoor classroom seating area as part of the boardwalk structure, located beneath existing sycamore trees to support outdoor instructional use. The school’s existing garden program would be relocated to a new area situated above the amphitheater. The relocated garden would include raised planting beds and a chicken coop, consistent with Viewpoint School’s commitment to sustainability and hands-on learning. Numerous coastal live oaks, willows, and landscaping trees are in this area.
