- Title
- Sunny Hills High School Field Improvements Project
- Description
- To accommodate the improvements at the track and field, the proposed project would remove existing landscape/artificial turf, concrete pavement, the curb surrounding the track and field, asphalt pavement north of the track, additional landscaping and curbs, and various track and field equipment including the scoreboard, bleachers, goal posts, discus cage, long jump areas, and shot put area. The proposed project would also remove the existing storage building, storm drain system and catch basin, and fencing and gates, and would relocate the batting cages on the site. Following demolition, the proposed project would install a synthetic track and synthetic turf field. A new long/triple jump area with a sand pit, sand catcher, and scoreboard would be located along the southern side of the track, while a high jump area and discus cage with a throw cage would be constructed along the northern side of the track. A shot put event area and softball batting cages would be installed north of the softball field. New sports striping and sports goals would be added, and the track and field would be shifted slightly east of its existing location. As part of these improvements, the proposed project would include installation of a subsurface stormwater infiltration system. The District would install permanent bleachers at the practice track and field to accommodate Sunny Hills High School students and spectators. The new bleachers would provide seating for approximately 1,843 people and would be approximately 24 feet in height, placed on new concrete pavement. The proposed project would also include a single-story, approximately 2,304-square-foot restroom and storage building that would be constructed west of the track and field, which would include five storage rooms; staff, boys’, and girls’ restrooms; and mechanical, electrical, and custodial rooms. Two exterior water fountains with a bottle refill station would also be provided. A new sewer line would be installed along the ingress driveway just south of the track and field, connecting to the water main in Lancer Way, and the driveway would be repaved after installation. Sewer cleanouts would also be installed along the proposed routing of the sewer line. Additionally, a new entry plaza would be constructed south of the track and field, consisting of ornamental fencing and gates, a concrete canopy, raised planters, monument signage, new paving, and retaining walls. The proposed project would install field lighting at the baseball and softball fields. The proposed project would also install field lighting with a public address (PA) system and bleachers at the track and field. A total of 22 field lights would be installed, as shown in Figures 8 and 9. Eight lights would be placed around the varsity baseball field (four at 70 feet and four at 80 feet); three lights would be placed around the varsity softball field (two at 60 feet and one at 70 feet); six lights would be placed around the junior varsity baseball field (two at 70 feet and four at 80 feet); and five lights would be located around the track and field (four at 80 feet and one at 50 feet). The PA speakers at the track would be mounted approximately 20 feet above grade. Figures 8 and 9 also show projected horizontal and vertical light spill in foot-candles. With the addition of field lights, the project would add evening practices between 3:30 PM and 8:00 PM for baseball, cross country, football, softball, and soccer. The District also intends to host periodic schoolwide assemblies at the track during regular school hours. No other operational changes are proposed: the project would not alter participant numbers, sports seasons, or spectator levels; would not introduce new practices, games, or events; and would not change start or dismissal times. Student enrollment and capacity would remain unchanged, and major spectator events such as Friday night football would continue to occur at Buen.
