Document Description
Objectives: The objective of the proposed project is to create and maintain a 300-foot wide (150 feet from the center line) shaded fuel break along Lanes Valley Road and Inskip Road on private property in Tehama County, CA, totaling 331 acres. The project would build on the network of firelines and other strategically located features established during the 2024 Park Fire and associated suppression activities, to reduce fuel continuity and support future wildfire suppression and fuel management efforts. Ongoing maintenance would manage vegetation regrowth to maintain fuel reduction objectives over time. The project area is located within grass-oak woodland and a small component of ponderosa pine forest, with elevations ranging from approximately 1,100 to 3,100 feet. Treatment Methods: Project work will consist of manual and mechanical removal of surface and ladder fuels, creating a shaded fuel break along Lanes Valley Road and Inskip Road. Manual work will involve hand thinning with chainsaws and a combination of chipping and piling and burning vegetation. Mechanical work will be in the form of mastication and mechanical piling. The target fuels will be brush species and trees less than 10 inches Diameter at Breast Height (DBH). Trees 10 inches DBH and above will be limbed to a height of 8 feet, and snags will also be removed. Vegetation removal will be followed up by herbicide application to reduce maintenance needs of the regrowth and sprouting species. As regrowth occurs, re-entry will be necessary to remove the vegetation and reapply herbicides.
