Document Description
The vegetation management will reduce wildfire fuels by establishing shaded fuel breaks, reducing fuel loads, maintaining fire breaks, and help maintain access of the State Highway System (SHS) during emergency events. These actions help ensure the SHS provides consistent access for emergency first-responders and the public during wildfire events, help create a strategic control line for pre-suppression efforts, and increase the likelihood of successful wildfire containment by lowering fire intensity, severity and slowing the rate of spread. Ultimately, the project will help protect and serve nearby communities, critical infrastructure, and natural resources. Treatment objectives include reducing ladder fuels and dense understory vegetation to disrupt vertical fuel continuity. Herbicide treatments will be applied to cut stumps and targeted regrowth under the direction of licensed professionals to maintain long-term hazard reduction. Vegetation Management work will be conducted at 27 Locations along the SHS in eight Bay Area counties.
