Document Description
The goal of this project is to enhance the infrastructure of the CAL FIRE Madera Mariposa Merced Unit Headquarters. This shall be accomplished by excavating in previously disturbed soils to establish a fiber optic line. Soil will be excavated to a minimum depth of 30 inches. The width of the trench will range from 18 to 24 inches. The combined length of trenching in the project area is estimated to be 254 feet. Mechanical equipment will be utilized to cut asphalt and excavate soil. Hand tools will be utilized where necessary. The trench will be backfilled and compacted once the fiber optic cable is installed. Project activities will be confined to areas containing backfills or ones that have been previously disturbed.

Reasons for Exemption
The project meets the requirements of Class 3, §15303 (d): New Construction Categorical Exemption to CEQA. Class 3 includes construction of new structures such as a water main, sewage, electrical, gas, and other utility extensions, including street improvements, of reasonable length to serve such construction.
Field review by CAL FIRE staff confirmed that no exceptions apply that would preclude the use of a notice of exemption for this project. The Department has concluded that no significant environmental impact would occur to aesthetics, agriculture and forestland or timberland, air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, energy, geology and soils, greenhouse gas emissions, hazards and hazardous materials, hydrology and water quality, land use planning, mineral resources, noise, population and housing, public services, recreation, transportation or traffic, utilities and service systems, or to wildfire. Documentation of the environmental review completed by the Department is kept on file at CAL FIRE Mariposa Headquarters at 5366 State Highway 49 North, Mariposa CA 95338.
