Document Description
The SERAL 2.0 project encompasses 118,282 acres with the goal of restoring
forest health, sequestering greenhouse gases within the Tuolumne Watershed, increasing landscape resilience to natural disturbances, supporting local economic opportunities, and reducing the spread of invasive non-native plants. Planned treatments include prescribed and managed fire, hand thinning, mastication, mechanical thinning, invasive weed control, and limited salvage operations. These actions are designed to restore forest resilience and strengthen the landscape’s capacity to function with fire as a natural ecological process. The purpose of the project is to reduce hazardous fuel accumulations and shift vegetation structure and composition toward conditions that are more consistent with their natural range of variation (NRV). A forest more aligned with its NRV is better able to adapt to and withstand disturbances such as large-scale high-severity fire, insect outbreaks, disease, drought, and the impacts of climate change.
