Document Description
SMUD proposes to construct and operate a new 230 kV substation that would replace the existing Pocket Substation. The proposed substation would convert or “step down” voltage from 230kV transmission lines to 69 kV subtransmission voltage through transformers and supporting equipment to safely reduce transmission voltages for local distribution. The new substation would be located immediately north of the existing Pocket Substation across Gardendale Road on a vacant parcel that is owned by SMUD. In addition, five new transmission poles would be installed, and four existing transmission poles would be repainted or replaced. Finally, the project would include installation and reconstruction of electrical lines to tie the proposed substation into the existing grid.
