Document Description
The installation of pollinator habitats in and around agricultural working lands. Multiple hedgerows will be installed throughout the farming operation spread out across Colusa County. Hedgerows will include native trees, shrubs, and forbs to support pollinators and other wildlife while providing a buffer zone from the agricultural operations. Multiple conservation cover plots will be planted, including pollinator friendly native grasses, forbs, and shrub species. All projects with be maintained for a minimum of 10 years. All individual project areas will be under 5 acres. Site preparation will include managing invasive weeds prior to planting and discing the soil. The maintenance plan includes invasive weed removal, mowing native grasses as necessary, and pruning plants to maintain farming operations.
“Colusa County RCD will use funds to implement portions of a Carbon Farm Plan for a producer in Colusa County. These projects will create habitat for pollinators and other wildlife species around working agricultural land. The project funds will go toward the RCD providing an implementation design, habitat restoration supplies (irrigation, plants, tree tubes, etc). Plant species selected will focus on pollinators and monarchs, among other large species.
Following the Carbon Farm Plan, species types and amounts will be selected from a local native nursery. Site preparation will include light earth moving as necessary, and invasive weeds will be treated prior to planting. CCRCD will recommend mulch, tree tubes and other methods to increase plant survivability. A simple irrigation system will be established with drip lines and tied into an existing system. During and after the implementation of the project, the RCD will conduct bimonthly site visits, taking photos for documentation, and recommending best practices for maintaining hedgerows based on the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) Conservation Practice Standards (CPS). Throughout the implementation process, the RCD will work with the farm to develop the project design, plant selection, and best management practices for the hedgerow.

Reasons for Exemption
his project will create native habitat where sparce non-native vegetation is the predominate species. Any native plant and tree within the project area will be integrated into the newly established habitat. These projects will take place on private agricultural land where farm field edges are conventionally treated for weeds. The projects will not be inside the waterway.

The project involves the establishment of hedgerows and conservation cover plots to provide habitat for pollinators in multiple areas in and around orchards. These projects will harm no endangered, rare, or threatened species, instead will create beneficial habitats. This project will enhance habitat throughout the working landscape by creating a more robust and diverse plant ecosystem. All project locations are under 5 acres. No hazardous materials are located in or around the project sites. This project will not negatively affect the surrounding landscape and has the potential to encourage other landowners to establish native habitat in the future.
