Document Description
Sentinel Peak Resources California LLC proposes to drill one new exploratory oil and gas production well. The proposed project would occur on public lands containing BLM administered sub-surface minerals within the Midway-Sunset Oil Field. The proposed project location is approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Fellows, California, and lies along Highway 33 between Sunrise Cogen Road and Mocal Road. The proposed activity includes the grading of a 200’ x 100’ well pad. No flowlines, producing facilities or other infrastructure are being evaluated under this proposal. The proposed project will result in 0.50 acres of permanent ground disturbance associated with the project footprint. The project is estimated to take ten days to complete. The grading portion will take two days with 10-hour operations, followed by six days of drilling with 24-hour operations, and finally two days of completion work with 10-hour days. In accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) (Pub. Resources Code, § 21000 et seq.), the CEQA Guidelines (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 14, § 15000 et seq.), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), CalGEM is the CEQA Lead Agency for the proposed project, while the BLM is the NEPA Lead Agency. CalGEM has reviewed the approved Environmental Assessment (EA)/Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) (DOI-BLM-CA-C060-2025-0112-EA) and finds that it meets the requirements of CEQA when combined with the actions taken by CalGEM to comply with CEQA public circulation and Tribal consultation requirements. BLM found that the project will not have a significant effect on the environment; therefore, CalGEM intends to use the FONSI rather than preparing a Negative Declaration (ND) for this project. The project activity(s) being permitted by CalGEM are within the scope of DOI-BLM-CA-C060-2025-0112-EA. CalGEM, as the CEQA Lead Agency, approved a permit for Sentinel Peak Resources California LLC to drill the well listed below, in the Midway-Sunset Oil Field in Kern County. Project Well(s): Band Govt 125, API # 0403070329, 35.214881, -119.559863
