Document Description
CALIFORNIA STREAM GAGE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM – SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY STREAM GAGE UPGRADE PROJECT Project Description Project Location: Various locations along levees throughout the County. See attached Vicinity Map. Project Justification: During storm and flood events, San Joaquin County relies on stream gages to provide accurate, real-time information on water levels and stream flows throughout the County. This data is critical for flood forecasting, emergency response, public safety, water resource management, and the protection of freshwater ecosystems. The California Stream Gage Improvement Program (CalSIP) will provide upgrades to our existing gaging stations. These improvements increase the reliability and availability of hydrologic data needed to support flood preparedness and informed water management decisions. Scope of Work: The San Joaquin County Stream Gage Upgrade Project will enhance seven existing stream gage locations, including: 1. Bear Creek at Alpine Rd 2. Five Mile Creek near its confluence with Fourteen Mile Slough 3. Duck Creek between Union Pacific Railroad and Airport Way 4. French Camp Slough at Airport Way 5. Corral Hollow Creek at Corral Hollow Road 6. Temple Creek at South Wagner Road 7. Lone Tree Creek at Escalon Bellota Road Environmental Setting: In these portions of the San Joaquin County, land usage is primarily rural with single family homes. There may be large trees adjacent to the project areas. Nesting and migratory birds, protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, may nest within these trees. Furthermore, the Swainson’s Hawk, a raptor species of concern within the State of California and listed as threatened may nest adjacent to or within the project area. A pre-construction survey for nesting Swainson’s Hawks and other migratory birds is recommended if construction is scheduled to occur from February 15th to September 1st. Beneficiaries: The primary beneficiaries of this project are the residents, businesses, agricultural community, and visitors throughout San Joaquin County. By improving the reliability and availability of real-time stream gage data, the County will be better equipped to monitor changing water conditions, forecast potential flooding, and make informed emergency response decisions during storm events. Enhanced hydrologic data will support timely public notifications, improve coordination with local, state, and federal agencies, and assist in protecting lives, property, critical infrastructure, and agricultural resources. Additionally, the improved stream gage network will provide long-term benefits for water resource management, infrastructure planning, and environmental stewardship.
