Document Description
The City of Long Beach prioritizes roadway safety and follows CA MUTCD warrant procedures. A collision review and field observations identified two high-priority intersections: Atlantic Ave at Atlantic Pl and Pacific Ave at Burnett St. At Atlantic Ave and Atlantic Pl, repeated broadside crashes occur, and a horizontal curve limits sight distance, making turns from Atlantic Pl difficult. At Pacific Ave and Burnett St, two blocks from an elementary school, drivers often fail to yield to pedestrians even with an RRFB and a crossing guard, and reported near misses have increased. To reduce collisions and improve safety for all users, install new traffic signals at both intersections with new poles and mast arms, upgraded signal heads and detection, ADA-compliant pushbuttons and countdowns, high-visibility crosswalks, stop bars set back to improve yielding, and advance warning signage. Coordinate timing with adjacent signals and school arrival and dismissal periods, and evaluate targeted turn restrictions or No Turn on Red where pedestrian conflicts are highest.
