Document Description
Caltrans proposes repairing a rockslide that occurred on southbound US-101, just south of Waldo Tunnel, at post mile (PM) 0.4. The rockslide occurred as a result of a storm and released an estimated 2,000 cubic yards of rock and debris, overtopping the existing k-rail and entering the traveled way. The slide is approximately 40 feet wide and 200 feet long. Field Maintenance crews responded the same day as the incident by clearing debris and restoring roadway access. Inspections after the incident identified approximately 220 feet of damaged k-rail as well as a damaged 4-foot-high fence that was mounted on the barrier. The slope remains unstable, with loose and overhanding rocks at risk of falling. This condition necessitates immediate slope repair to uphold the integrity and usage of the State Highway System. Construction will involve removing loose material and overhanging rock on the slope and rocks and boulders behind the k-rail. The slope will be graded to restore stability and grade. The damaged 4-foot-high fence that is mounted on top of the barrier will be replaced and the damaged k-rail will be repaired or replaced. Any damaged or impeded drainage will be reestablished. Temporary traffic control will be implemented during construction.
