Document Description
Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) proposes to construct an approximately 21,000 square foot new Fire Station 51 facility, including 40,000 square feet of site improvements, at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to replace the existing Fire Station 51 located at 10435 S. Sepulveda Boulevard. The new Fire Station 51 would be constructed directly south of the existing Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Station 80 located at 7250 World Way West, and would incorporate modern equipment, advanced technologies, and purpose-built design features that support current and future emergency response requirements. Once the new fire station facility is complete, the existing 9,300-square-foot Fire Station 51 would be decommissioned and demolished.

Reasons for Exemption
The Proposed Project qualifies under Section 15301 (Class 1) and Section 15332 (Class 32). Under Class 1, the Proposed Project consists of the demolition of the existing Fire Station 51, an existing small structure that is less than 10,000 square feet and is located on developed airport property, resulting in no expansion of use and no change in operational capacity. Additionally, the Proposed Project includes the construction of a new Fire Station 51 that satisfies all five conditions of Class 32 to qualify independently as in-fill development: 1) the Project is consistent with applicable general plan designations, policies, and zoning regulations; 2) located within the City of Los Angeles limits, on a site of less than five acres, surrounded by urban uses; 3) absent of habitat for endangered, rare, or threatened species; 4) has no potential to result in significant impacts related to traffic, noise, air quality, or water quality; and 5) on a site that can be adequately served by all required utilities and public services.
