Document Description
The purpose of this project is to close down or remove two (2) Underground Storage Tanks (UST) at Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds to eliminate the possibility of contamination from the tanks and/or their contents. The tank in the courtyard of the Stuck-up Inn will be closed and abandoned in place and a second UST located adjacent to the Chapel will be removed, along with any associated piping. Work at each tank will include the following:
For the Closure of the UST at Stuck-up Inn:
A licensed contractor will use a non-sparking hand tool to core through the top of the tank and assess for the presence of liquid. If liquid is present, work will use a vacuum truck to remove the liquid and fill the tank with concrete slurry to render the tank inert and then cap the tank with a layer of native soil. A hand auger will be used to take soil samples around the tank for sampling.
If liquids are not present, an excavator will be used to excavate the tank, associated piping, and any stained or visibly contaminated soil and properly dispose of all materials.
For the Removal of the UST at the Chapel:
Work will use a vacuum truck to remove any liquids remaining in the tank and a backhoe to excavate an approx. 12-ft long x 4-ft wide x 5-ft deep area for the tank removal. Stained or visibly contaminated soils will be removed and stockpiled in lined roll-off bins or drums and sampled for proper disposal. Any associated piping will be removed as well and disposed of properly.
