Document Description
Pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 1652, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has approved the Crespi Pond Vegetation Management Project submitted by the City of Pacific Grove. Avian utilization of habitat at Crespi Pond is limited by the overgrowth of emergent vegetation. The Project is intended to restore the historic balance of 70% open water and 30% emergent vegetation at Crespi Pond to provide habitat diversity suitable for avian species such as waterbirds and passerine birds. The Project consists of an initial vegetation removal event and two subsequent vegetation removal events. Each event will include the launch of a barge from the bank of Crespi Pond and operation of that barge from the open water. Emergent vegetation will be removed down to the root mass using a clam bucket attachment. Removed vegetation will be temporarily stockpiled along the edge of Crespi Pond and left to dry. Once that vegetation dries, it will be loaded into dump trucks by an excavator for disposal offsite. Subsequent vegetation removal events will occur no more than once every two years and will not remove more than 50% of the emergent vegetation present at that time.
