Document Description
The project includes fuel reduction activities on 154 acres adjacent to Guys Gulch Road southwest of Grenada in Siskiyou County, California. The purpose of the project is to reduce hazardous fuel loading and ladder fuels to improve wildfire resilience and support firefighter access and operational effectiveness within a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. The project will also improve ingress and egress along Guys Gulch Road for evacuation and emergency response for properties accessed by the road, and will treat previously treated areas to prevent re-accumulation of hazardous fuels. Treatment activities will be conducted by hand crews and will include manual cutting, thinning, pruning and piling of brush, small diameter trees, and dead, dying, or diseased trees. Vegetation to be removed consists primarily of dense buckbrush (Ceanothus cuneatus), manzanita (Arctostaphylos viscida and Arctostaphylos patula), and mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus betuloides). Trees up to 12” diameter at breast height (dbh) and dead, dying or diseased trees of any diameter will also be removed to provide up to 30-foot spacing between trees. Material generated by treatment activities will be piled and burned or chipped. Chipping may take place along existing roads and off-road trails within the project area. A tracked chipper may be used to access areas off trail, but only on slopes less than 50 percent. Manual control line construction will also be conducted and prescribed broadcast burns will be implemented following initial treatments. Project activities may take place annually to maintain the desired vegetation conditions.
