Document Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes repairing a failed joint assembly on Eastbound State Route (SR-) 380 at the connector to Northbound US-101 (post mile 6.37) in San Mateo County. The existing elastomeric molded rubber expansion joint panels are showing signs of distress. Some anchor bolts are exposed, with some of the polyurethane header filler loose around the bolts. Panels make noise upon contact with tires, suggesting additional panels and/or headers are in distress. Field Maintenance removed the polyurethane header fillers and anchor bolt nuts which revealed that the joint seal panel was broken length-wise along the joint. The concrete headers on both sides are also broken to pieces, exposing bar reinforcing steel.
The project will install temporary steel plates over the failed joint seal assembly and implement traffic control. Temporary decking and temporary bracing (concrete barrier) will also be installed prior to construction. The damaged portions of the bridge and joint seal assembly will be removed and repaired/replaced. Once the structural concrete bridge sections, bonded joint seal, and bar reinforcing steel are repaired, the steel cover plate will be reconstructed.
