Document Description
The applicant proposes to demolish the central portion of the existing 67,862 square foot LAB and construct a new Central Wing addition. The addition would include two above-grade story and one below-grade level, with space for exhibitions, storage, offices, and workspace. It would be structurally connected to the existing South Wing and other buildings, resulting in a 75,310 square foot South and Central Wing. The project also includes interior and exterior repairs to the south wing, including voluntary seismic upgrades and sprinkler installation, and new landscaping and hardscaping.

The proposed addition replaces and reconstructs existing facilities on the same site, maintains substantially the same use and capacity, and does not result in a substantial adverse change to a historical resource. Therefore, pursuant to Section 21084 of the California Public Resource Code, the proposed project is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to State CEQA Guidelines, Article 19, Section 15302, Class 2 (Replacement or Reconstruction). As such, there is no substantial evidence demonstrating that an exception to a categorical exemption pursuant to CEQA Guidelines, Section 15300.2 applies.
