Document Description
Caltrans proposes repairing an embankment washout that occurred on US-101 at post mile (PM) 5.5 in the City of Petaluma, Sonoma County. The slipout was caused by this winter’s storms, which oversaturated the slope. The surface water runoff over the slope has created a few large washouts that range from 10- to 15-feet wide and 2- to 3-feet deep. The embankment has a slope of 1H:1V. The existing ditch at the toe of the slope connected to the drainage inlet was covered by the washout material. Clearing and grubbing of material and vegetation on the slope will be required. The failed embankment slope will be excavated and then reconstructed by backfilling with borrowed material and compacted to 90% relative to compaction with the most recent standard specifications. New side slope protection will be constructed using vegetated concrete block erosion control maps (VCBMs). Bonded fiber matrix, hydromulch, hydroseed, and compost will be placed on the repaired slope. The blocked drainage inlet will be uncovered and reestablished. Traffic control will be required during construction and construction area, detour, and changeable message signs will be temporarily installed prior to construction.
