Stabilization of Bodie Methodist Church

Stabilize and restore the visibly leaning historic Bodie Methodist Church at Bodie State Historic Park to allow for the continued use of the building as an interpretive element of the historic town. The proposed repair approach will straighten the building and install a permanent in-wall shear system within the existing stud cavities. Using hand crews, work will: For the Structural Stabilization: • Conduct pre-construction documentation, laser survey, and establishment of control lines; • Remove, label, and store approx. 1,400 sf of interior lap siding; • Remove, label, and store eight (8) windows and install temporary plywood protection at openings; • Prep the floor and crawlspace (slot for tie straps, trim pony blocks, and install underfloor cripple wall sheathing); • At fourteen (14) locations, install holdown assemblies and use screw anchors to connect tie straps to the existing concrete foundation; • Install 2x2 vertical boundary members at 53 stud bays (106 total pieces); • Use four (4) grip hoists with sequential tensioning and laser monitoring to complete a controlled de-racking of the structure; • Install 53 in-wall plywood shear panels at top and bottom plates; and • Conduct a controlled release of the racking system and confirm that the corrected geometry is held by the newly installed permanent shear system. For the Restoration: • Reinstall the removed and stored windows, exterior trim, and interior lap siding; • Replace damaged boards with in-kind materials that match profile; and • Patch and paint as needed. The work is governed by the 2022 California Building Code, the 2018 National Design Standard, and the 2022 California Historic Building Code, reflecting the significance of the structure and the requirement to minimize intervention while achieving full structural stability.
