Document Description
Caltrans proposes a SHOPP reactive safety improvement project located on I-8 PM 16.0 to 17.4, from Ballantyne Ln. undercrossing (UC) to 2nd St. in El Cajon in San Diego County. The scope includes installing Midwest Guardrail System (MGS) and concrete barrier type 60M (approx. 6340 ft) on the westbound right shoulder, including on the entrance and exit ramps. The project would upgrade (10) and install new (9) overside drains. The project would also include the installation of TL-2 crash cushions on the ends of the barriers at the 2nd St. on-ramp and Mollison Ave. off-ramp/on-ramp; and replacement of signs and striping in proposed impact areas.

Reasons for Exemption
The proposed project consists of the addition of safety devices for use in conjunction with existing structures and facilities to improve safety of road users by preventing roadway departure events. The existing facilities do not contain concrete barriers or have guardrail systems that do not meet current standards. Specifically, the project would aim to reduce fatal and serious injuries by installing MGS and concrete barrier.
