Document Description
Project proposes to install a new well at Standish Hickey State Recreation Area to replace a well that is estimated to dry up by June 2026. The existing well provides water to the park's campground and staff residences and to the nearby California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Leggett Station.
Two (2) potential well areas (A and B) have been identified, and a single pilot hole will be drilled first within area A. If a reliable source of water is found, a well will be developed and no work will occur in area B. If a reliable source of water is not found in area A, then a pilot hole will be drilled within area B. If reliable water is found within Project Area B, then the well will be developed.
Well development will involve the following:
• Install a well casing 10 - 12 inches in diameter and no more than 100 feet deep;
• Pour a 6-ft x 6-ft x 6-in. thick concrete slab on the ground surface around the well casing;
• Install a small wooden structure, no more than 9-ft high, on the slab to cover the well;
• Excavate a 24-in. deep x 16-in. wide x 50-ft long utility trench to install new utility lines and connect to the existing utility lines in the area; and
• Use excavated spoils to backfill the trench.
The well will be setback at least 150 feet from septic leach fields/tanks and 100 feet from septic lines. Once the new well has been developed and brought on-line, the old well will be abandoned until the dry season, when the well will be removed and properly disposed of off-site.
