Document Description
Replace the existing crib wall on the Independence Trail (East) at South Yuba River State Park with a newly designed 30-ft long crib wall to improve public safety, enhance trail stability, and prevent further erosion. Work will:
• Use hand tools and a mini excavator to remove the existing retaining structure and tread material and dispose of offsite;
• Remove vegetation and debris within the existing footprint;
• Use hand tools to grade, level, and compact the area to establish a stable foundation;
• Use redwood timbers to assemble a 30-ft long by 2-5-ft tall retaining wall with railing and incorporated drain features to manage runoff and prevent water pressure buildup as follows:
o Use 5/8-in 4-ft long rebar spaced 4-ft apart to anchor lumber tiers;
o Place weep holes every 5-6 ft on every other tier to allow for adequate drainage; and
o Install geotextile fabric to separate crushed aggregate from soil to prevent drainage clogs; and
o Install a handrail with tapered vertical supports and use ½-in x 7-in. lags at top and middle and 6-in. lags at the bottom to pin.
• Backfill with approx. 50 cu. yards of ¾-inch crushed aggregate and compact; and
• Reconstruct the trail surface above the crib wall with proper slope, alignment, and tread width to meet accessibility standards.
