Document Description
In late December 2025, a strong winter storm hit the Ventura area, with heavy rainfall totaling over 17 inches of rain in the upper Ventura River Watershed in a 4-day period. After the subsequent storm in early January, over 25 inches of rain had fallen in the upper watershed in a 2-week period. This deluge of precipitation caused high flows in the Ventura River that staff later discovered had eroded approximately 30 feet of bank adjacent to the City’s water production well, Nye Well #8. This erosion damaged existing rip rap protecting Nye Well #8, and the bank erosion is putting Nye Well #8 at risk of severe damage or total loss should another large storm event or high river flows occur, and emergency construction work is needed to repair the bank and protect the well. Construction will adjust the location of a secondary high-flow channel that has scoured the western bank, relocating the secondary channel further into the middle of the floodplain. Native riverbed material between the new channel location and the eroded bank will be used to rebuild the bank. Rip rap will be placed along the rebuilt bank to prevent erosion. Native riverbed material from within the relocated channel area will be used to cover the rip rap, and re-establish more gradual bank contours, restoring the bank condition. Re-vegetation is anticipated to include seeding with a native pallet, and erosion control measures will be placed along the bank.
