Document Description
Berry Petroleum Company, LLC proposes to drill six oil and gas wells within the Midway-Sunset Oil Field- Pike Lease in Kern County. The proposed project, Berry Corporation LLC, Midway Sunset Oilfield- Pike Lease (CalGEM PFID 421437), involves pre-construction clearing and grading, expansion of three existing well pads, connecting to existing electrical lines, and installation of above ground piping to connect to existing infrastructure. The project is estimated to take 75 days and would take place on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administered mineral estate and surface land ownership, with ground disturbance of approximately 0.4 acres.
In accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) (Pub. Resources Code, § 21000 et seq.), the CEQA Guidelines (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 14, § 15000 et seq.), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the California Department of Conservation’s Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) is the CEQA lead agency for the proposed project, while the BLM is the NEPA lead agency. CalGEM has reviewed the approved Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) (DOI-BLM-CA-C060-2024-0054-EA) and finds that it meets the requirements of CEQA when combined with the actions taken by CalGEM to comply with CEQA public circulation and Tribal consultation requirements. BLM found that the project will not have a significant effect on the environment; therefore, CalGEM intends to use the FONSI rather than preparing a Negative Declaration (ND) for this project.
The project activity(s) being permitted by CalGEM is within the scope of DOI-BLM-CA-C060-2024-0054-EA. CalGEM, as the CEQA Lead Agency, approved permit(s) for Berry Petroleum Company, LLC to drill the wells listed below, in the Midway-Sunset Oil Field.
