Document Description
Borrego Palm Canyon Residence 1, or the Stone House, was constructed in the winter of 1934-1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps working in Anza Borrego Desert State Park as the caretakers cottage for the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground. The inside of the cottage has been remodeled multiple times. The concrete foundation of the residence is cracked and needs to be repaired. The back east room has settled and separated from the main house approximately ½ inch to 1 ich in some places leaving a gap on the exterior stone veneer. The inside floor in the room seems to have settled 1-3 inches in some areas of the concrete floor. It is unclear if all the settling is movement or if the concrete was poured in a way that sloped the concrete floor, but it is not level. Some of the stones have also fallen from their location on the outside walls.
To fix the cracked foundation a ~12x10 foot area of floor around the crack will be jackhammered out. Footing (2ftx2ft) will be installed every 4 linear feet or as needed. Then a new slab will be poured to match the existing room floor elevation. Cracks in the rest of the foundation will also be resurfaced. Once the foundation is repaired a new laminate flooring will be installed throughout the residence. Minor mortaring repairs on the outside of the building are also planned - regrouting all outside stones where needed and matching the original mortar.
