Document Description
(11) Canary Island Pine and (6) Red Gum Eucalyptus trees located north of the John K. Van de Kamp Bridge within the Lower Arroyo Seco area of the City will be removed for purposes of habitat restoration and fire hazard mitigation. All of the subject trees are non native which is called for removal for purposes of habitat restoration. The subject trees also possess characteristics that make them more prone to flammability, which is of concern to the adjacent property owners. The subject trees will be replaced on a 1:1 ratio with 24 in nursery size native tree species.

Reasons for Exemption
This project is covered by the City Council’s original CEQA findings for the Lower Arroyo Seco Habitat Restoration Project approved in 2020. In the event the tree removal is an independent project, this action is exempt from CEQA under Categorical Exemptions 1 (Existing Facilities), 8 (Actions for the Protection of the Environment) and 33 (Small Habitat Restoration Projects). The removal of the trees involves maintenance and alteration of existing public facilities and topographical features that involves no expansion of the existing use, is an action to assure the restoration and protection of the environment where the process involves procedures for protection of the environment, and is a sub-5 acre project to assure restoration and protection of habitat. No exceptions to the exemption apply.
