Document Description
Caltrans proposes repairing pavement settlement, an inlet, and a culvert on northbound Highway 1 in San Mateo County at post mile (PM) 18.61. The project will involve repairing the pavement settlement that was caused by a disconnected culvert and a failed drainage inlet. The pavement settlement area is approximately 80 feet by 20 feet with a vertical settlement of approximately 2 to 3 inches along the curved portion of the horizontal alignment. This causes vehicles to dip while traversing the curve, creating vehicle maneuverability concerns and safety risks for motorists. In addition, tension cracks observed on the northbound pavement surface further indicate subsurface erosion and settlement. Work will involve trenching to a depth of 7 feet to remove and replace the existing inlet with a wider G2 inlet. The culvert connection from the existing culvert will be extended to the new inlet. The sub-base of the roadway will be injected with polyurethane hi-density expansion material foam to fill the voids around the culvert. The pavement will be ground and repaved with hot mix asphalt (HMA) Type A. The existing piezometer will be abandoned. Any pavement striping and delineation that is damaged will be replaced. Temporary traffic control with traffic signal, trench shoring, and railing type K will all be required during construction activities.
