Document Description
The Project will perform exploratory trenching to determine the source of suspected hydrogen sulfide discharge and provide a remedial action to impede landfill leachate from entering the onsite mitigation wetlands from the East Third Avenue Landfill. It was determined that landfill leachate is likely seeping from the landfill into the upland side of the wetland. Project activities will include creating a 25-foot-long trench that will be 4-5 feet wide and 5-6 feet deep. Then a 2-foot-wide bentonite cut-off wall consisting of bentonite, or a combination of bentonite and cement grout slurry, will be installed to prevent landfill leachate from continuing to travel into the wetland. This will also consist of 2 feet of drainage rock on the upslope side of the wall surrounded by non-woven polypropylene geotextile fabric, and a well riser to provide future liquid monitoring. If a discharge pipe is found to be causing the seep, it will be capped off and leachate monitoring will be conducted via the landfill’s Leachate Monitoring Well network. Following construction, the wall will be backfilled with a minimum of one foot of native soil, and the site will be returned to its pre-disturbance elevation and grade. The upper 6 inches of existing wetland vegetation removed prior to construction will be replaced, and the area will be seeded with a native erosion control mix.
