Document Description
The University contracted with an artist to develop a piece of art to be placed in front of the east facing side of Meriam Library. Please see the attached two pages showing renderings of the location and a drawing detailing the method of installation. This project specifically proposes this approach to NOT alter the character of the exterior Meriam Library by any means. This project uses the following installation method to not damage the existing building with its proximity to a historic resource. The University, therefore, proposes the following project: This composition is a 3D mural style and is constructed and fabricated using a range of materials including aluminum, stainless steel, cast cement, mosaic glass, and acrylic urethane paint. This work was chosen by the campus community via a competition. Project scope includes a self-supported 1,133 lbs art piece installation and appurtenances. This vertical frame structure is designed according to the current California Building Code and Seismic Standards. The art piece framing will be attached to a support system that consists of two HSS (Hollow Structural Steel) 8x8x1/4 columns mounted on 6 ft deep concrete reinforced foundation piers. The installation is located in the adjacent landscaping area at the east-facing side of the building. The artwork will be spaced with a minimum 18-inch clearance away from the building and begin at a height of approximately 15’ above grade. Approximate dimensions of the artwork are 30’ wide by 5’ tall.
