Reasons for Exemption
• The proposed project would be fully located within the SGES.
• The proposed project would not result in a change of use of the campus or any of its
facilities and would not expand the capacity of the school.
• The proposed project would improve overall campus conditions, constructing an
Exploratorium and modernizing existing buildings to be seismically compliant and
meet California Green Building Standards (Title 24), without increasing capacity or
generating new environmental impacts.
• The project site is not within an environmentally sensitive environment.
• The proposed project would improve the existing classrooms and add an Exploratorium
room of approximately 1,458 square feet as part of the new 1,600-square-foot
building. The Exploratorium room is intended for use by all classes for specific
experimental and laboratory. Therefore, it would not add more classrooms. In addition,
of the approximately 39,000 square feet classroom space on campus (90 percent of the
existing buildings space), the Exploratorium room represents approximately a 4 percent
increase in the total square footage of classrooms on campus, which is below 25
percent or 10-classroom threshold identified under the Class 14 (Minor Additions to
Schools) categorical exemption.
