Document Description
Caltrans proposed repairing an eroded slope and drainage issue on SR-280 in the City of San Bruno, San Mateo County, at post mile (PM) 20.24 under structures 35-0197L/35-0197K and on structure 35-0197R. Significant storm runoff bypassed the existing drainage system on the structures and discharged on tot eh slope, causing erosion beneath the concrete slope paving. At the top of the slope between the two structures storm runoff caused additional erosion of the embankment. Eroded slope material migrated onto the adjacent city street and sidewalk along Jenevein Avenue/Whitman Street, which serves as a pedestrian connection between the residential communities on both sides of the structures. Sediment has also entered the City drainage system. It was further discovered that the bridge seal on Structure 35-0197R has been compromised, allowing the storm runoff to leak onto the slope and sidewalk below.
Work includes backfilling voids under the concrete slope with sand slurry and backfilling the cavity between structures 35-0197L and 35-0197K with dirt. The existing drainage issue will be fixed. The bridge seal between the structures and the concrete median barrier at the bridge seal location will be replaced. Erosion control will then be placed on the slope to prevent future erosion. Traffic control and temporary k-rail will be required during construction.
