Project Description
Project Location:
Von Sosten Road: 740 feet west of Hansen Road. See attached Vicinity Map.
Project Justification:
There is an ongoing issue with speeding on Von Sosten Road near Lammersville Elementary School. Residents have voiced safety concerns for students crossing the road to go to school. To calm traffic and make a safer crossing for students, the San Joaquin County Department of Public Works will be installing a raised crosswalk.
Scope of Work:
The project will consist of:
1. Installing a raised crosswalk on Von Sosten Road adjacent to Lammersville Elementary School. It will cross over the ditch and connect to the school parking lot.
2. Replacing two existing 40-foot corrugated metal pipes (CMP) with reinforced concrete pipes (RCP).
3. Regrading approximately 280 feet of the ditch along the school frontage to allow for proper drainage.
Environmental Setting:
In these portions of the San Joaquin County, land usage is primarily rural with single family homes.
There are many large trees adjacent to the project area. Nesting and migratory birds, protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, may nest within these trees. Furthermore, the Swainson’s Hawk, a raptor species of concern within the State of California and listed as threatened may nest adjacent to or within the project area. A pre-construction survey for nesting Swainson’s Hawks and other migratory birds is recommended if construction is scheduled to occur from February 15th to September 1st.
Beneficiaries:
The public will see increased safety and fewer hazards with this pedestrian safety and drainage improvement. Overall, there will be more reliability within the project area.
