Document Description
The City of Chico proposes to complete emergency repairs on two actively eroding sites within Lindo Channel along Manzanita Avenue near the Howard Drive intersection. High flows from recent storm events resulted in sudden and significant erosion of the channel that is risking the collapse of the adjacent paved road shoulder and bike/travel lanes of Manzanita Avenue, a critical collector in the City’s roadway system. Repair Area 1 is approximately 13 feet deep, 121 feet long, and 30 feet wide, encompassing approximately 0.10 acres. Repair Area 2 is approximately 135 feet long, 20 feet wide, and ranges from 4-10 feet deep, encompassing approximately 0.05 acres.
The restoration work includes placement of rock slope protection (RSP) in the form of graduated cubic yard sized boulders placed over erosion control fabric. Repair Area 1 will require backfilling and compaction to restore the roadway shoulder. Work with heavy equipment will be completed from the top of bank. Hand work may occur within the channel to guide and key in base boulders. The majority of work is anticipated to occur outside standing or flowing water. However, if some flow through the work area remains, it may be necessary to divert flows and/or conduct placement of the RSP at a rate slow enough to minimize the potential of surface water turbidity increases. A biological monitor will be present for all in-channel work. Traffic closures of one to two lanes will be implemented as needed.
