Document Description
The purpose of this project is to remove and control non-native plant species at Brannan Island State Recreation Area while enhancing the existing population of Antioch Dunes evening primrose (ADEP) and introducing a new population of Contra Costa wallflower (CCW), both federally endangered plants. The creation of multiple spatially distinct populations will preserve the long-term biological diversity of both species. On an annual basis, State Parks staff will: Use hand tools and chainsaws to remove all non-native vegetation and selectively thin native vegetation within 5 feet of either ADEP or CCW for a maximum plot of 1.7 acres; Treat cut stump woody vegetation and foliar application of herbicide up to three times to observe regrowth; Use a string trimmer or walk-behind mower in spring and summer to create a disturbance regime; After mowing use hand tools to scrape a maximum of 2 inches of soil; and Dispose of removed vegetation by either chipping onsite, as directed by Environmental Scientist, or haul offsite to a local green-waste facility for disposal.
