Document Description
The California Department of Transportation, using state and federal funding, proposes to replace the Sweetbrier Overcrossing (OC) bridge deck on Interstate 5 at PM 61.75 in Shasta County.
Purpose
The purpose of the project is to improve the bridge deck, preserve the structural integrity of the bridge, extend the useful life, reduce future maintenance and capital needs, decrease worker exposure, and provide a safe and reliable structure for all modes of travel and goods movement. The project will restore bridge health to a good condition.
Need
At the Sweetbrier OC (06-0115), traffic, tire chain wear, freeze/thaw exposure, and rebar corrosion from the use of deicing salts have resulted in deterioration of the bridge deck, which overall has resulted in poor bridge health. Additionally, the guardrail approaching the bridge does not meet current design standards and the paint on the steel girders has eroded.
Project implementation would include the following improvements:
Bridge Deck
• Demolish and replace bridge deck
• Overlay new deck with one inch of polyester concrete
• Install link slabs using Caltrans Engineered Cementitious Material Ultra-High Strength
• Remove sidewalk and widen shoulder on north side of bridge
• Upgrade existing bridge rail
• Replace bearings and joint seals
• Spot blast and paint bridge girders
Pavement
• Cold plane/install 0.2 feet of hot mix asphalt on either side of the bridge
• Widen the bridge deck approach northeast of the bridge
• Install shoulder backing
Traffic Management Systems
Install a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera, controller walkway, maintenance vehicle pullout, and utility hookups immediately north of the bridge.
Safety Elements
• Replace existing metal beam guardrail with permanent crash cushions at bridge approaches.
Signs and Delineation
• Replace signs, pavement markers, and roadway delineators in accordance with current standards.
Disposal/Borrow Sites
No disposal or borrow sites are proposed. Project implementation would include approximately 0.2 acres of ground disturbance. The maximum excavation depth is estimated at 10 feet. Excess soil material and construction debris would become the property of the contractor.
Staging
Staging activities would occur southeast of the bridge.
Utilities
No utility conflicts are anticipated.
Right-of-Way
Caltrans would acquire an encroachment permit east of the bridge to accommodate pavement conformity. No permanent right-of-way take is anticipated.
Schedule
The work would be completed in one construction season and would require approximately 166 working days.
