Document Description
As part of the California Stream Gage Improvement Program, the California Department of Water Resources has executed a contract with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to repair and upgrade an existing stream gage along the San Joaquin River. The existing stream gage equipment will be replaced/upgraded, a swing arm will be installed at the existing cableway, and the existing stairway from the gage house to the staff plate will be replaced. The swing arm will require the installation of a 4'x4' concrete pad outside the channel, while the stairway will require the replacement of two concrete pilings within the channel and the installation of a 1'x4' concrete pad at the top of the staircase outside the channel.

Reasons for Exemption
Proposed upgrades and repairs to the existing station would provide real-time data, monitor hydrologic conditions during storm events, and provide hydrological information to the public. Proposed activities qualify for categorical exemptions 15301 (Existing Facilities), 15304 (Minor Alterations to Land), and 15306 (Information Collection). Proposed activities would result in minor ground disturbance and would not have a significant effect on the environment, and none of the exceptions described in the CEQA Guidelines Section 15300.2 apply. Measures have been incorporated as part of the project to avoid and minimize any potential environmental impacts.
