Document Description
This project entails the restoration of the natural area surrounding the school as defined by the land outside its fences stretching to Corbett Street to the east. The purpose of this project is to involve local students in the restoration of approximately 0.39 acres of school district property to create habitat for the Mission Blue Butterfly and other pollinators. Prior to the reestablishment of native plants, invasive plants like Himalaya blackberry, French broom, sourgrass, echium, pampas grass, and English ivy must first be removed. After nonnative vegetation is cleared, the hillside will be reinforced with erosion control fabric to stabilize soils, and straw wattles will be placed at the base of the hillside to prevent runoff into Corbett Street. For the native plant implementation phase, native plants and seeds will be sourced from local plant nurseries and local groups such as the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Park Conservancy, and San Francisco Park and Recreation Department will be consulted to source best management practices for restoring Mission Blue Butterfly habitat and sourcing plant materials for the Mission Blue's host plant: Lupinus albifrons var. collinus, Lupinus Formosus, and Lupinus variicolor. Students will be involved with planting plants, facilitated by Point Blue's STRAW Program. (WCB Project Tracker ID: 2022065).
