Document Description
The proposed Project would include replacement of signage at various locations of the Marriott Marquis by Marriott Marquis Hotel (applicant) in the city of San Diego, California. Work to specifically complete the proposed Project would involve the fabrication and installation of one (1) high rise illuminated channel letter set sign mounted to a spider frame, three (3) sets of illuminated channel letters at ground level, flat cut-out lettering on ground-level monument sign faces, and installation of new ground sign cabinets.
The high rise illuminated channel letter set sign is located at the top of the north-facing Marriott Marquis tower and would replace the existing illuminated channel letter set sign. The sign change would reflect improved branding for the Hotel and would be secured to structural mounting points by a spider frame. Work for this portion of the proposed Project would include dismantling and removing existing sign components, disconnecting and securing all electrical feeds, removal of current anchors and bracketing, installation of additional framing required to support the improved signage, and reconnecting the new signage to electrical service. The spider frame and channel letters would be delivered to the installation elevation by a crane and/or swing stage. Crane use to lift product to the roof would be limited to one (1) day and would be placed in the rear area of the property, away from pedestrian walkways and public access points. The swing stage would be utilized for the duration of the high-rise sign installation, and no walkways or pedestrian areas would be affected. A staging area as well as a pedestrian and vehicular safety zone would be established with barricades, delineations, rerouting, and signage. Construction of this component of the proposed Project is anticipated to take approximately three (3) weeks to complete.
The proposed Project also consists of various ground-level sign improvements. These sign changes would reflect improved branding for the Hotel and would consist of illuminated and non-illuminated components. The illuminated wall/façade signage replacements, at various designated locations, would require disconnecting the current electrical feed, removing the existing cabinets, mounting systems, and lettering, repairing and patching anchor points as needed, and installing the new lettering. Electrical connection would be restored following installation. The non-illuminated signage improvements would consist of the replacement of flat cut-out lettering on ground-level monument sign faces, replacement and installation of ground sign cabinets, and necessary improvements to directional monument signage. Work would include cleaning the monument surfaces to secure optimal adhesion, preparation of foundations for new sign cabinets, securing fastening of new signage, anchoring ground sign cabinets to the prepared foundations, and reconnection to power. All the improved ground-level signage would be installed using hand tools and precision alignment equipment and would take approximately one (1) week to complete.
All materials required for the proposed Project would be stored on the roof of the Hotel or within the Hotel leasehold in locations away from guests and public right-of-way. All equipment used during the proposed Project would be positioned away from public areas and delineated for safety by cones, taping, or barricades. Construction of the proposed project is anticipated to occur in late 2025.
Due to its nature and limited scope, construction of the proposed project would generate a minor amount of vehicle trips and would require limited use of equipment. Therefore, impacts related to air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and transportation and traffic are not anticipated to occur. Furthermore, the Applicant would be responsible for complying with all applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding construction demolition debris, hazards and hazardous materials, and stormwater.
