Document Description
Caltrans proposes to perform wildfire fuels reduction on State Routes 49, 193, and 50. Locations of Work:
State Route 49: Post miles (PM) 20.50-22.75, 27.50-31.00
State Route 50: PM 19.8-61.00
State Route 193: PM R4.5-26.9
Vegetation Management Prescription
Within the work areas, a vegetation management strip (VMS) will be created from zero feet to 10 feet from edge of pavement. All vegetation, dead or alive, will be removed within the VMS. All cut vegetation will need to be removed off site. Stumps cannot exceed four inches above bare mineral soil.
From 10 feet outwards (100 feet from the edge of pavement or to the edge of the Caltrans right of way, whichever is closer), a shaded fuel break (SFB) will be created. The SFB will retain a shade canopy while reducing ground fuels. The contractor’s registered professional forester will mark all trees, brush, and chaparral to be removed to meet this prescription. All dead, dying, or diseased trees within striking distance of infrastructure or the traveled way will be removed. The Contractor will remove conifer trees less than eight inches (8”) DBH and hardwood trees less than six inches (6”) DBH. Prune limbs of remaining trees to a height of eight feet (8’) above ground level. Remove all cut material within 20 feet of edge of pavement, and transport off site to an end-use facility. Within the remainder of the shaded fuel break chip, grind, masticate or lop and scatter to a depth less than 10 inches maximum to mineral soil, or optionally remove from the treatment area for off-site disposal.
If the Caltrans right of way is wider than 100 feet from edge of pavement, the contractor will remove dead, dying, or diseased trees beyond the SFB to the edge of the Caltrans right of way.
