Document Description
This project proposes a vegetation management project on three (3) units (55-acres) of land in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park to remove non-native invasive species, restore native vegetation and increase forest resilience to fire and other stressors. Work will use hand and mechanical tools to complete the following work across the units:
-Use chainsaws to remove encroaching second-growth Douglas-firs (no greater than 12-in. dbh) from oak woodlands;
-Hand remove invasive species such as Scotch broom and French broom;
-Remove, as needed, California Bay Laurel and Coyote Brush;
-Use hand tools and small gas-powered tools to establish a mow-line along a powerline corridor; and
-Hand remove, or burn, a small stand of Medusa head grass.
Cut/removed vegetation may be strategically piled within units for burning or hauled off-site. Prescribed burning will be carried out every 2-7 years to maintain prairie habitat within the units.
