Reasons for Exemption
The project consists of exploratory drilling of 42 holes over a 6-to-8-week period using an augur through unconsolidated sediments and does not propose the use of water, air, drill pads, sumps, grading, or the building of any new roads. Drill holes will be filled the same day of drilling once samples have been taken. In the event the drilling is not
completed on the same day the holes will be covered to prevent wildlife from falling in. Open ground will be selected for drilling to avoid vegetation and reduce habitat disturbance. At the end of the projects duration the site will be left in its natural
condition. Mineral resource extraction and processing are typical uses described within the Resource/Land Management Land Use Category established in the Countywide Policy Plan. Mining activities are allowed within the Resource Conservation land use zoning district with a temporary use permit if under one acre and provided SMARA Section 2714(d) is not exceeded.
