Document Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), using State and federal funding, is proposing to install four luminaires, including other minor improvements on State Route (SR) 273 in Shasta County. The limits of work occur between post mile (PM) 14.77 and 15.0.
The purpose of the project is to provide continuous lighting along the project limits, which would enhance the multimodal transportation network and improve public safety. The project is needed to reduce the potential for pedestrian and bike injuries along the subject section during nighttime hours.
Project implementation includes luminaire installation and median barrier replacement. To facilitate luminaire installation, a ±2-foot-diameter by ±2-foot-deep hole would be excavated to accommodate the footing. In support of the lighting, conduit would be integrated internally into the proposed median barrier. To provide power, conduit would be installed through horizontal boring (±175 feet, ±4 feet deep) between the median and an existing pedestal located northeast of the intersection of SR 273 and Wyndham Way. Minor potholing would occur along the proposed boring alignment. To maintain public safety, approximately 658 linear feet of median barrier would be replaced. As part of median barrier replacement, supplemental paving would be performed.
Approximately 0.095 acres of soil would be disturbed during project implementation;
estimated maximum excavation depth would be four feet. No vegetation removal is
proposed. Where applicable, project construction would be staged on the road shoulder. Lane closures may be necessary during construction.
Right-of-Way
The proposed work is expected to occur within the Caltrans’ right-of-way; no temporary construction easements are anticipated. Further, no permanent right-of-way take is anticipated.
Staging
Staging activities are expected to occur within Caltrans’ right-of-way.
Disposal/Borrow Sites
Excess soil would become the property of the contractor. No borrow sites are anticipated.
Utilities
Three city of Redding light poles occur within the median. These poles would be removed in advance of or concurrent with proposed construction activities. No other conflicts have been identified.
Schedule
The work would be completed in one construction season and would require approximately 30 days to complete.
Consultation/Coordination
Caltrans performed a records review, field surveys, and consultation/coordination with
applicable agencies, tribes, and individuals.
Permits
Based on the current scope, the project would not be subject to resource agency permits.
