Document Description
The goal of this project is to create hedgerow plantings and artificial nest boxes for birds that will provide habitat for beneficial arthropods (e.g., native bees), birds, and other vertebrate wildlife. The proposed 3,180-ft. hedgerow plantings are on a property that uses no insecticides, which can serve as a refuge embedded in an intensively and conventionally managed vineyard and cropland landscape. They are buffered from neighboring vineyards and insecticide drift by roads, but have connectivity to irrigation water conveyance channels that have threads of existing habitat. The installation of three barn owl nest boxes and four nest boxes for small songbirds, like bluebirds and tree swallows, will support these species to expand into habitats that previously may not have been available to them.
