Reasons for Exemption
The Canevaro Ditch is part of the Cowell Area Diverters (CAD), which is a collection
of four privately owned ditch operators that have diversion rights on the Merced
River. The Canevaro Ditch (and other CAD operators) has been diverting water for
agricultural irrigation since before the 1900s. The diversion frequently requires
construction of temporary rock weirs within a portion of the Merced River. The rock
weir directs flow into the associated ditch. Without the rock weir, there would not be
sufficient flow to meet the allocated diversion needs for agricultural use.
