Document Description
This Project aims to restore impaired meadows in the Klamath Mountains through implementation of low-tech process-based restoration (LTPBR) techniques. The prescribed LTPBR techniques include constructing post-assisted wood structures (PAWS) and beaver dam analogs (BDAs) in incised stream channels to prevent further erosion and encourage aggradation, improving hydrologic connectivity and ground water retention. These structures will also help in drowning out encroaching conifers that have been able to grow within the meadows due to lower groundwater tables caused by stream incision. PAWs and BDAs will be constructed using rocks, logs, small woody debris, and native herbaceous vegetation material sourced from on site. Construction will use hand tools and manual labor. The materials will be harvested throughout the larger meadows area to minimize impacts at each site. Additionally, the structures that are channel spanning and taller in nature will also assist in slowing the migration and spread of non-native eastern brook trout that are present in most of the meadow streams.
