Document Description
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is issuing a California Endangered Species Act permit pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 2081(a) to MCOSD (Permit No. 2081(a)-25-002-RP) for a project to expand the population of Tiburon jewelflower within its natural range through seed collection, amplification, and outplanting. Tiburon jewelflower currently has a restricted range limited to two occurrences on the Tiburon peninsula. CNDDB EO 1 is located within the Preserve. MCOSD recently acquired 109 acres of serpentine grassland habitat directly adjacent to the Preserve that appears suitable for Tiburon jewelflower, but there are no known historical populations within the new site. The Project will collect Tiburon jewelflower seed from CNDDB EO 1, amplify the seed under nursery conditions, and outplant the amplified seed within the newly preserved property to expand the boundaries of CNDDB EO 1. No more than five percent of available seed will be collected from CNDDB EO 1 in July of 2025 and 2026. Collected seed will be temporarily stored before being amplified at the MCOSD nursery in January 2026 and 2027. Once fruits mature, seed will be collected and stored for outplanting in November or December of 2026 and 2027. Suitable outplanting sites will be selected to best match the conditions of reference sites within the existing population. 1 m x 2 m plots will be marked with stakes and seeded with a target of 500 seeds per plot. The number of plots established will depend on the amount of seed available for outplanting each year. Seeded plots will be monitored annually each spring for the term of the permit to assess establishment and level of recruitment.
