Document Description
The California Fish and Game Commission amended multiple regulations related to white sturgeon sport fishing for the 2026 season and onward. The amendments will continue catch-and-release fishing regulations that were established by emergency regulatory action on Sept. 6, 2024. Existing emergency regulations will expire in Sept. 2025 following readoption in Dec. 2024 (extension 1) and May 2025 (extension 2). The current amendments are necessary to continue catch-and-release fishing through candidacy under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) and after the Commission takes action on the CESA listing status of white sturgeon, regardless of the chosen action, to both ensure the species is protected from over-harvest and that losses to the recreational fishing industry are mitigated. The amendments also change the sturgeon fishing report card from a year-long season (Jan. 1 though Dec. 31) to match the sturgeon fishing season established by emergency action (Oct. 1 through June 30).
