Document Description
The proposed project involves the installation of a coastal monitoring station at Doheny State Beach through a collaboration between the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) and California State Parks. The monitoring station is part of the California Coastal Monitoring Network, a multiyear initiative to establish shoreline observation infrastructure at select State Park sites. The primary purpose is to support long-term data collection on sea-level rise, shoreline change, and coastal flooding—data which will be used to improve coastal hazard modeling, inform park management decisions, and support adaptive planning. The station will consist of a fixed monitoring system mounted on a standard 35-foot utility pole. The pole will be installed in the developed campground area near the southern retaining wall, above the high tide line, and within the footprint of existing infrastructure. This location provides a stable foundation, a safe distance from active surf zones, and optimal vantage for shoreline monitoring. The pole will support FLIR Blackfly-S 12-megapixel cameras with 83° wide-angle lenses, configured to capture shoreline imagery and generate time-averaged image products at 30-minute intervals during daylight hours. Images will be stored locally and transmitted to SIO for processing and integration into the Coastal Monitoring Network’s public data dashboard.
